Penfriend has occupied the same Burlington Arcade unit since 1950, two storefronts down from the original location. The vintage restoration workshop is upstairs; the modern catalogue is a quietly comprehensive run of Japanese and German limited editions.
The room itself is a half-attic at the top of a tight Edwardian staircase — six display cases, two writing benches, a workshop window through which a junior hand will be visible doing seat-work on a vintage Onoto. You phone ahead for vintage. You walk in for modern.
